FG Upgrades Lekki-Alausa Power Infrastructure, Adds 272MW

On Tuesday, the Federal Government, represented by Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, commissioned upgraded transmission infrastructure at Alausa and Lekki in Lagos, which added a combined 272MW of bulk power capacity. At Alausa, a 30MVA transformer was replaced with a new 100MVA unit, increasing the station's total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA and providing an additional 80MW to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC).

At Lekki, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) installed two 60MVA transformers and nine new 33kV feeders, doubling the substation's capacity from 120MVA to 240MVA, resulting in an increase of approximately 192MW. Tegbe stated that these projects reflect the administration's commitment to addressing structural bottlenecks in the power sector.

The Lekki project, executed by Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited with World Bank support, will also include a 1x300MVA transformer expected to be energized in November 2026. TCN Managing Director/CEO Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz noted that the Alausa project would provide stable electricity to at least 70,000 residents.
