Nigeria Apologizes for Misunderstood Igbo King Ceremony

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has apologized for the controversy surrounding the alleged coronation of an Igbo king, which reportedly took place in the Eastern Cape province. The event, which involved the crowning of Igw Kugompo, sparked violent protests, including vehicle burnings, as South Africans expressed anger and demanded government intervention. Deputy High Commissioner Olajide Ogunmadeji addressed the situation, emphasizing that the event was a cultural festival rather than a political coronation, which had been misinterpreted. He explained that the gathering was a significant cultural practice among the Igbo people, akin to the New Yam Festival and other traditional ceremonies, and not an installation of traditional authority. Ogunmadeji's statement aimed to clarify the misunderstanding and mitigate further unrest in the region.
