Nigeria to Prosecute Repentant Terrorists for Serious Crimes

The Federal Government of Nigeria has stated that repentant terrorists who are accused of serious crimes will still be prosecuted. This announcement was made during the unveiling of new standard operating procedures (SOP) for the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) program at a workshop in Abuja.

Adamu Laka, the national coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), emphasized that the SOP aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the implementation of the DDR program. The procedures were developed through consultations across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones and are intended to strengthen cooperation among agencies while ensuring respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Abimbola Wo Osik, a director at the NCTC, noted that the program is crucial for addressing various security threats, including terrorism and banditry. However, she clarified that the program will not shield individuals accused of serious crimes from facing appropriate legal processes.
