Federal Government Enhances Vocational Education in Nigeria

The Federal Government has equipped 38 federal and state technical colleges across Nigeria to expand access to free technical and vocational education, aiming to tackle youth unemployment and poverty. This initiative, supported by the World Bank, provides beneficiaries with free tuition, training materials, monthly stipends, and starter packs to help them establish businesses post-graduation.
Mrs Blessing Ehi Ogwu, the National Project Coordinator of the Innovation Development for Effective Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project, announced this during an inspection at the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Orozo, Abuja. The initiative benefits 20 federal and 18 state colleges, focusing on practical skills acquisition.
Mr Olatunji Odewunmi from the Federal Ministry of Education noted the existence of over 1,000 TVET centres in Nigeria. The program includes biometric attendance monitoring to ensure discipline among trainees.
Dr Stella Uhuegbu, Principal of FSTC Orozo, mentioned that the college's skills program accommodates over 1,000 trainees in various trades. Beneficiaries reported positive outcomes, with some securing business opportunities shortly after training.
