Nigeria Congratulates Taohe Elias on UN Law Commission Election

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its congratulations to Taohe Elias, a Nigerian international legal expert, for his election to the United Nations International Law Commission during the commission's 77th session held in Geneva. A statement issued on Thursday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described Elias's election as a recognition of Nigeria's contributions to the development of international law and multilateral diplomacy.

Elias emerged successful in a competitive election to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Kenya's representative, Professor Phoeb Okowa, with candidates from Ghana and Botswana also contesting the seat. With a decade of experience in international legal affairs, Elias has previously served as the registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals and held various legal advisory positions within the United Nations.

The Ministry noted that the International Law Commission, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1947, is responsible for the progressive development and codification of international law.
