Lagos State Government Approves Makoko Reclamation Project

The Lagos State Government, through Commissioner Dayo Alebiosu, confirmed the approval of the Makoko waterfront reclamation project by the Federal Government. The project, executed by FBT Coral Develop, complies with statutory requirements, and work is set to commence following the necessary permits.

Alebiosu clarified that concerns raised by the Federal Ministry regarding potential dredging activities near the Third Mainland Bridge were unfounded, as investigations revealed that dredging would not occur in that vicinity. Instead, sand would be pumped from locations several kilometers away from the reclamation site.

The project has undergone an environmental impact assessment and received drainage clearance approval. Although the Lagos State Government suspended the project for a year to obtain additional clearances, it has now resumed.

Alebiosu reiterated the state's stance against illegal dredging, which remains a significant challenge despite ongoing enforcement efforts. He cautioned residents of Ikorodu against supporting illegal dredging activities, which could lead to severe ecological consequences.
