Federal Government Tackles Ecological Crisis in Calabar

The Federal Government has initiated urgent measures to address an ecological crisis in Calabar, Cross River State, which threatens critical national assets, including the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory and an NNPC jetty. This intervention is led by the Ecological Project Office (EPO) in partnership with the Cross River State Ministry of Environment.

The crisis arose from the failure of the Channel 2 underground drainage system along Anansa Road, resulting in significant environmental damage, infrastructure destruction, and economic disruption. Dr. Aishetu Mohammed, the EPO Permanent Secretary, stated that the situation extends beyond a simple drainage issue and poses national security concerns.

A joint technical assessment will be conducted to identify the causes and sustainable solutions, with involvement from the Naval authorities and the National Hydrographic Agency. The EPO plans to use advanced analytical tools, including artificial intelligence, to understand the ecological dynamics.

The intervention will also consider the livelihoods of affected communities, ensuring cultural sensitivity in the response.
