FG Launches Task Team to Combat Health Sector Corruption
On Monday, the Nigerian federal government inaugurated a Joint Task Team comprising members from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Abuja. This initiative aims to address financial leakages within health institutions.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, stated that the objective is to protect public investment and enhance integrity in the health system. He emphasized that corruption in the health sector can lead to dire consequences, including the unavailability of essential medicines and services.
Pate outlined that the ministry has already deployed 774 Performance and Financial Management Officers under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) to ensure proper fund utilization. The initiative also includes using verified National Identification Numbers to authenticate beneficiaries and improve accountability.
Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, Chairman of ICPC, noted that corruption impacts health outcomes, including maternal and infant mortality rates.
