Nigeria Introduces Hybrid Payment System at Airports

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a hybrid payment system for access gates at airports, enabling motorists to pay using both cash and cards. This decision, announced by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, is set to take effect on March 13, 2026.

The initiative aims to address traffic gridlock caused by the previous cashless access gate payment system, which was suspended. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is focused on resolving these issues by engaging with concessionaires to introduce a fully automated electronic system for airport access gates, which will eventually eliminate cash payments.

Motorists can continue using the FAAN Go cashless card until further notice, while electronic payment options, including Point of Sale (POS) terminals, will remain available. The ministry is committed to enhancing the cashless payment system and restoring previous access gate payment arrangements while working towards full automation.
