Nigeria Launches National Sports and Education Programme

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced the National Sports and Education Excellence Programme, which aims to establish eight Sports and Education Centres of Excellence across selected tertiary institutions. This initiative was unveiled on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The programme seeks to integrate quality education with elite sports development, starting with the University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Federal College of Education, Okene, and Babcock University. Dr. Alausa described the initiative as transformative for Nigeria’s education sector, emphasizing its potential to produce world-class athletes and professionals in various sports-related fields.

The programme aims to allow young Nigerians to pursue both education and sports simultaneously, reduce youth crime, and promote national cohesion. Alausa stated that the initiative would create structured pathways for sports development and enhance human capital in Nigeria.
