FG Increases Hazard Allowance for Varsity Workers to N486,000

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved an upward review of hazard allowances and other benefits for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in federal universities. This new remuneration package, effective retroactively from January 1, 2026, includes a significant increase in the laboratory hazard allowance for senior employees, which will rise to N486,000 annually.

The decision was communicated in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on July 20, 2026, following an agreement reached with NASU on June 29, 2026. The circular, signed by Acting Secretary Adighiogu A.

Chiadi, outlines various adjustments, including an increase in the annual hazard allowance for employees on CONTISS 6-15 from N360,000 to N486,000, while those on CONTISS 1-5 will see an increase from N180,000 to N243,000. Additionally, higher responsibility allowances for senior non-teaching officials were approved, with registrars and bursars' allowances increasing from N750,000 to N840,000 annually.
