Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment at Lake Chad Basin Meeting

The Nigerian government, represented by Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, reiterated its commitment to regional cooperation during the 71st session of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) Council of Ministers held in N'Djamena, Republic of Chad, from March 3-6, 2026. Ojukwu emphasized the need for collective efforts to address environmental and security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin, which is vital for the sustenance of approximately 40 million people across member states.

She acknowledged the ongoing security situation as a major concern and commended the efforts of the multinational joint task force in combating terrorism and violent extremism in the region. Ojukwu also highlighted the alarming shrinkage of Lake Chad due to climate change and advocated for scientific solutions to revitalize the lake and sustain the livelihoods of millions.

Additionally, she expressed appreciation for President Bola Tinubu's government and the endorsement of Nigeria's candidacy for Ambassador Ibrahim Babani as the new Executive Secretary of the Commission for a four-year term.
