Nigeria Achieves Four Years of Zero Piracy Incidents

The Federal Government of Nigeria has recorded zero piracy incidents in its territorial waters for four consecutive years, as disclosed by Minister Adegboyega Oyetola during the 2026 graduation ceremony of the Deep Blue Project Task Group held at the 5th Battalion Army Barracks in River State. The government is pushing for Nigeria's removal from the global war-risk list, which is expected to reduce shipping costs and boost investor confidence in the maritime sector.

The Deep Blue Project, launched in 2021, aims to tackle piracy, oil theft, illegal fishing, and sea robbery, transforming Nigeria's maritime security landscape. The project has led to a 70% reduction in piracy incidents across the Gulf of Guinea.

Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, reported that 492 personnel graduated from a specialized training program, which included training in maritime security operations and the use of advanced surveillance systems. The government is also considering expanding the Deep Blue Project to vulnerable coastal corridors.
