FG Plans Wudil Livestock Market as West Africa's Hub

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the Wudil Livestock Market in Kano State into a flagship international standard livestock hub, aimed at modernizing livestock trade in West Africa. Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, announced this initiative during an inspection on July 3, 2026.

The Wudil market is recognized as a strategic asset, currently handling an estimated throughput of 130 trucks of livestock weekly. However, the market faces significant challenges, including inadequate sanitation, lack of proper slaughter infrastructure, and insufficient regulatory control.

The proposed redesign will establish a modern permanent livestock exchange hub that meets international standards, improving the livestock value chain and reducing losses during transit. The plan includes features such as animal pens, veterinary quarantine units, and a secure administrative office.

Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, from the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development, commended the initiative, emphasizing its potential to significantly enhance revenue generation and trade efficiency in the livestock sector.
