Nigeria Launches Digital Platform for Livestock Sector

On Saturday, during a visit to Kano State, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, unveiled a digital platform designed to transform Nigeria's livestock sector and promote value addition in the leather industry. This initiative includes the Kano State Livestock Information Management System, which integrates livestock registration, veterinary health management, disease surveillance, and support services into a single online platform.

The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to modernize livestock administration and enhance data-driven policymaking. Maiha emphasized the importance of local leather processing, noting Nigeria's potential to produce 50 million hides and skins annually.

He called for increased investment in local leather manufacturing, highlighting the global leather footwear market's projected growth to over $628 billion by 2033. The initiative aims to create jobs and wealth, with a target of producing 200,000 pairs of leather sandals for school children in Kano by the end of the year.

Bashir Dankulu, CEO of Kanotan's Tanneri Industry, commended the government's focus on local manufacturing.
