Nigeria's Government Partners with UNHCR for Displaced Rehabilitation

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its intention to collaborate with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the private sector to enhance rehabilitation efforts for displaced individuals. Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, made this declaration during a meeting with UNHCR's Nigeria Representative, Mr Arjun Jain.

They discussed the Leadership Alliance for Enterprise, Acceleration and Prosperity (LEAP) initiative, aimed at mobilizing private investment in communities affected by displacement. Senator Bagudu emphasized that displacement disrupts livelihoods and can exacerbate poverty, necessitating the restoration of economic opportunities for sustainable reintegration.

He noted that displaced individuals often lose access to vital resources, such as farms and fishing grounds, and stressed the importance of creating jobs and economic opportunities. The LEAP initiative aligns with Nigeria's long-term development goals, particularly the aspiration to build an inclusive, investment-driven economy.
