FG and UNDP Launch 23 Solar Mini-Grids in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), inaugurated 23 solar power mini-grids on Thursday in Abuja, delivering electricity to 50,000 Nigerians. This project is part of a broader initiative to expand energy access in underserved communities and stimulate rural economic growth.

The pilot phase of the Africa Mini-Grid Programme aims to provide reliable electricity to 20,000 households, businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities across rural Nigeria. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe emphasized the transformative impact of this infrastructure project, which extends beyond mere electricity supply to empower communities and improve healthcare and education.

Tegbe also noted the importance of renewable energy as a key component of Nigeria's energy mix, moving away from traditional diesel generators. The Rural Electrification Agency's Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, stated that electricity is essential for modern economies, impacting sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture.

The initiative is expected to serve as a model for other African countries.
