Urgent Call to Revive Ngwo Borstal Institute for Youth

Rev. Ikechukwu Nwaogu, the Executive Director of the Economic and Social Empowerment for Rural Communities, called on the Federal Government to urgently rehabilitate and operationalize the abandoned Ngwo borstal institute.
This appeal was made during a press conference in Enugu on a Monday event held in collaboration with the Enugu State Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Task Force, marking International Women's Day 2026. Nwaogu noted that the Ngwo facility is one of four borstal homes in Nigeria that remain abandoned, creating a gap in the state's capacity to rehabilitate rescued minors.
The GBV Task Force recently rescued 114 adolescent girls from sexual exploitation and prostitution during a raid in the state. Nwaogu emphasized that the absence of functional borstal facilities hinders efforts to provide proper rehabilitation for victims.
He disclosed that the state task force, inaugurated on December 8, 2025, recorded 1,000 cases of gender-based violence, leading to 218 arrests and 32 cases currently in court.
