ESERC Urges Revival of Borstal Training Institute in Enugu

Rev. Ikechukwu Nwaogu, the Executive Director of the Economic and Social Empowerment of Rural Communities (ESERC), called on the federal government to revive the Borstal Training Institute located in Ngwo, Enugu North Local Government Area, during a press conference held on Monday.

This event was part of activities marking the 2026 International Women's Day. Nwaogu emphasized that reviving the institute would facilitate the rehabilitation of survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and juvenile offenders in Enugu State, which is situated in the southeastern region of Nigeria.

He highlighted the urgent need for government intervention in rehabilitating victims of GBV, especially following a recent raid that rescued 114 adolescent girls from sexual exploitation. Nwaogu noted that there are only four Borstal homes in Nigeria, including the one in Ngwo, which are currently neglected and dilapidated.

He pointed out that the Borstal Training Institute would strengthen the juvenile justice system and provide necessary support for vulnerable adolescents.
