FIFA Establishes Committee to Oversee Nigeria Football Federation

FIFA has approved the establishment of a normalisation committee to oversee the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) until May 31, 2027. This decision was communicated in a letter signed by FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström and addressed to Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme.
The committee's members will be appointed jointly by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The NFF announced that the committee will manage the federation's affairs until fresh elections are held, following the resignation of President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and other executive committee members on August 27, 2026.
This mass resignation was prompted by criticism over Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons' inability to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The NFF secretariat will continue to handle daily operations until the committee is appointed, and none of the committee members will be eligible to contest in the upcoming NFF elections.
