Sun King Launches Solar Freezer to Combat Food Spoilage

On 14 September 2026, Sun King, an off-grid solar energy company, launched a solar-powered freezer called PowerFreeze in Nigeria, aimed at addressing food spoilage and the rising costs associated with petrol and diesel generators. The event took place in Lagos and was attended by customers, partners, and government representatives.

The PowerFreeze system includes a 210-litre fridge-freezer, solar panels, an energy control unit, and battery, allowing it to switch between refrigeration and freezing modes. It features heavy insulation and five built-in ice batteries to maintain cold temperatures overnight.

The energy control unit primarily uses solar energy but can also draw from the electricity grid during insufficient sunlight. Country Business Leader for Nigeria, Lisbon Ogunsanmi, stated that the expanded inverter portfolio allows customers to select systems based on their energy needs and financial capacity.

Vice President of Sales for West and Central Africa, Omoyemi Tuga, emphasized the benefits of PowerFreeze for food vendors and households, particularly in reducing food waste and improving financial predictability.
