First Lady Donates N2bn to Revive Akwete Textile Industry

On her visit to Akwete, the historic home of the Akwete fabric in Abia State, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, announced a donation of N2 billion aimed at reviving the local textile industry. She underscored the significance of preserving Nigeria's cultural heritage, particularly the traditional craft of Akwete weaving, which she described as a priceless asset.

Senator Tinubu expressed her admiration for the women who produce the fabric, highlighting the spiritual connection they have with their craft and the importance of passing this tradition to future generations. She urged the Igbo people to promote Akwete globally and announced plans to upgrade the production site to better reflect its cultural significance.

During the visit, she was conferred with the traditional title of Ugo Nwanyi of Abia and was welcomed by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, his wife, and various dignitaries.
