Akwete Fabric Revival: N2 Billion Investment Announced

Akwete fabric, an iconic handwoven textile and symbol of Igbo craftsmanship, is undergoing a revival with renewed government support and private sector interest. On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, visited Abia State to support local women weavers.

Accompanied by Governor Dr. Alex Otti and his wife, Priscilla, she emphasized the importance of preserving this cultural heritage.

During her visit, she announced a donation of N2 billion to enhance the Akwete production site. Senator Tinubu highlighted the significance of Akwete fabric, which is traditionally made from materials like sisal, hemp, and cotton, and called for the younger generation to embrace and continue this craft.

She expressed her commitment to ensuring that Akwete reaches a global audience, urging Igbo people to take pride in their cultural identity and heritage.
