Naval Chief Advocates Logistics Overhaul for Fleet Renewal

On 16 September 2026, Vice Admiral I. Abbas, the Chief of Naval Staff of the Nigerian Navy, addressed the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the logistics system to ensure the sustainability of the Navy's fleet renewal efforts.

Speaking at the Nigerian Navy Logistics Seminar 2026 in Kano, he stated that while the Navy has made significant progress in acquiring modern platforms and advancing indigenous shipbuilding, the challenge lies in maintaining these assets throughout their operational life cycle. He stressed that fleet renewal must be accompanied by logistics renewal and that through-life support considerations should inform acquisition and capability planning.

Vice Admiral Abbas traced the evolution of naval logistics, noting the establishment of the Nigerian Navy Logistics College in January 2022 as a response to the increasing complexity of logistics. He urged participants to focus on the logistics architecture necessary for the Navy's sustainability over the next decade, emphasizing critical areas such as infrastructure, maintenance, and technology.

The success of the seminar, he stated, would be measured by tangible improvements in responsiveness and resource utilization.
