Ogun Fish Farmers Seek Relief After Devastating Floods

The Ijebuland Fish Farmers’ Association has appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for emergency relief and compensation following devastating flash floods that impacted fish farmers in Ijebu-Ife and Ijebu-Igbo. The floods, caused by two days of heavy rainfall on July 13 and 14, 2026, resulted in the destruction of fish ponds and production assets valued at over N700 million, affecting more than 150 farmers.

Mr. Oluyemi Oludayo, the association’s secretary, stated that the affected farmers are primarily located in the Mojalake Fish Farm Cluster in Ijebu East and various communities in Ijebu North.

He attributed the flooding to blocked waterways and inadequate drainage systems, exacerbated by urban development and the failure to maintain the Ogbere Stream, which overflowed due to neglect. The association urged the Ogun State Government to improve drainage systems and dredge the Ogbere Stream to prevent future incidents.

Losses in Ijebu-Igbo alone were estimated at over N300 million.
