Ogun Fish Farmers Seek Help After N700m Flood Damage

Fish farmers under the Ijebuland Fish Farmers’ Association have appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for emergency support following flash floods that destroyed farms and assets worth over N700 million in Ijebu-Ife and Ijebu-Igbo. The floods, caused by two days of heavy rainfall on July 13 and 14, 2026, affected more than 150 farmers, washing away fish ponds, catfish stocks, and production equipment.

Mr. Oluyemi Oludayo, the association’s Secretary, noted that the flooding resulted in losses exceeding N300 million in Ijebu-Igbo alone, attributing the disaster to blocked waterways and poor drainage systems.

He specifically mentioned the Ogbere Stream, which had become too shallow and narrow due to neglect, leading to overflow after the rains. The association urged the Ogun State Government to rehabilitate drainage systems and dredge the Ogbere Stream to prevent future flooding.

Oludayo also criticized the ongoing reconstruction of the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway for lacking adequate drainage, which contributed to the flooding.
