Akwa Ibom Governor Orders Demolition of Flood Obstructions

On Wednesday, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno ordered the demolition of buildings obstructing drainage channels across the state to address recurring flooding issues affecting parts of Uyo metropolis. This directive came during an unscheduled inspection of the judiciary staff quarter project in Uyo, where he warned that the government would no longer tolerate illegal developments that block waterways and worsen flooding.

The recent flooding displaced residents in areas including Nkemba Street, Abak Road, Itu Road, and Osongama Estate. Governor Eno announced plans to develop a new flood drainage master plan to adapt to the changing urban landscape, as the existing flood management blueprint no longer reflects the realities of rapid urbanization.

He also established a clean Akwa Ibom brigade, a specialized unit within the Ministry of Environment, to clear drainage channels and prevent flooding. Furthermore, he directed the Ministry of Environment to establish an environmental sanitation court to prosecute offenders violating sanitation laws.
