Akwa Ibom Governor Orders Drainage Plan Review Amid Floods

Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno has ordered a comprehensive review of the state’s drainage master plan within one week to combat recurring flooding in Uyo and surrounding communities. This directive followed his inspection of flood-affected areas, where he reaffirmed his administration's commitment to finding both immediate and long-term solutions to the flooding crisis.

Governor Eno stated that buildings obstructing natural waterways would be removed to ensure proper stormwater flow and prevent further damage. He instructed the Ministries of Environment, Works, and the Akwa Ibom State Waste Management Agency, along with relevant consultants and construction firms, to convene and submit a detailed action plan.

Eno urged residents to stop dumping refuse indiscriminately and keep drains clear. He expressed sympathy for those affected by the floods and acknowledged that while the flooding is not entirely man-made, human actions have exacerbated the situation.

The governor also commended the State Emergency Response Team, led by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, for their efforts in managing the crisis.
