Former DSS DG Chief Albert Horsfall Dies at 84

Chief Albert Korubo Horsfall, the former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), died at the age of 84 on September 9, 2026, in a Lagos hospital following a prolonged illness. He served as the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), now known as the DSS, from 1990 to 1992.

Horsfall was also the pioneer Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), contributing significantly to the development of Nigeria’s modern intelligence system. His career began as a police officer, and he was among the foundation staff of the former National Security Organisation (NSO).

After his tenure in the intelligence sector, he became the pioneer chairman of the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC), focusing on the development of oil-producing communities in the Niger Delta. Adeola Ajayi, the current Director-General of the DSS, expressed condolences, recognizing Horsfall as an exceptional public servant and a true patriot of Nigeria.
