FSSS Webinar Urges Land Restoration in Bauchi State

On World Earth Day, the Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions (FSSS) hosted a webinar highlighting the urgent need to restore degraded land in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Senior agronomist Dr.

Reuben Solomon stressed the importance of enforcing existing environmental regulations and adopting regenerative agriculture practices to combat climate change and land degradation. Timothy Azaker, a technical lead at FSSS, discussed the Estrra project, which promotes regenerative agriculture among smallholder farmers through various interventions such as fruit forest establishment and soil health improvement.

The project aims to directly benefit 14,000 smallholder farmers and indirectly reach 75,000 beneficiaries across seven local government areas. Philip Ortes revealed that 41% of the project area is completely degraded, with 60% deforested.

The webinar concluded with calls for government action to enforce laws against indiscriminate tree felling and to incentivize land restoration efforts, urging private sector involvement to support sustainable agricultural practices.
