Building Collapse in Enugu: One Feared Dead, Four Rescued

An uncompleted four-storey building, reportedly a hotel under construction, collapsed in Enugu, with one person feared dead and four others rescued from the rubble. Emergency workers responded early Sunday morning at the Independent Layout Enugu site.

Eyewitnesses indicated that more lives could have been lost without the state government's regulatory actions, which included sealing the site due to non-compliance with building codes. Uche Anya, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Agency (ECTDA), stated that the property was approved in 2021, but serious integrity issues were found during inspections.

Anya had issued a stop work order and sealed the site six months prior to the incident. The representative of the property owner, who resides abroad, has been in discussions with the agency to address the violations.

Okwudiri Oha, Director of the Enugu State Fire Service, praised the quick response from various emergency services, which facilitated the rescue operations.
