NEMA Launches Rescue Operations After Enugu Building Collapse

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has launched coordinated rescue operations after a four-storey uncompleted building collapsed at Independence Layout, Enugu State, at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Reports indicate that individuals were trapped under the debris.

NEMA's director-general, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, instructed the Enugu Operations Office to deploy an emergency rescue team to the site and collaborate with relevant emergency agencies. The rescue team began operations immediately upon arrival, utilizing an excavator to remove debris and access areas where victims might be trapped.

By 11:20 a.m., the joint rescue team had recovered the lifeless body of one male victim. NEMA confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency responders continuing their search for additional victims.

The operation is being conducted in partnership with several agencies, including the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority, and the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
