New Insurgency Threat Emerges in Borgu Region, Niger State

On a Friday in August, armed assailants abducted more than sixty individuals from a mosque in Dekara, Niger State, during Jumu’at prayers. This incident marks the third attack on Dekara and surrounding areas in recent memory, with previous raids forcing residents to flee.

A video surfaced two days later, showing captives, including the elderly and children, urging relatives to identify them. This tactic mirrors a similar strategy used after the February 2026 massacre in Woro, Kwara State.

Notably, this attack occurred just sixteen days after Nigerian security forces executed a historic rescue operation on 5 August, freeing 308 individuals from captivity in Kainji Lake National Park. President Bola Tinubu hailed this as the largest same-day rescue in Nigeria's history.

The evolving landscape of insurgency now extends beyond Borno, with the Borgu region emerging as a new hub for insurgent activities, characterized by a blend of jihadist factions and criminal networks.
