Ghana Launches Union for Informal Waste Workers

The Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO), in collaboration with government and development partners, inaugurated the National Union for Informal Waste Workers in Accra, Ghana. The event gathered waste worker leaders from all 16 regions, government officials, and private sector stakeholders.

GAYO stated that the initiative evolved from a single cooperative into a nationwide movement aimed at promoting the contributions of informal waste workers. The union will serve as a platform for these workers to engage with government, municipalities, and industries, advocating for safer working conditions, improved market access, and social protection.

Ghana’s Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, recognized the union as a lawful organization under the Labour Act 2003 and pledged government support for safer workplaces.

Richard Matey from GAYO emphasized the importance of legal recognition and partnerships with local authorities. The initiative received backing from various organizations, including the UMI Fund and The Earthshot Prize.
