Ghana Renames Kotoka Airport to Accra International Airport

The Ghanaian government has approved the renaming of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, restoring its original name. This decision was announced in a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport, which outlined the implementation phase to update official records and public materials.

The process will involve revising statutory instruments and updating airport signage and aviation public digital platforms. Despite the domestic renaming that occurred decades ago, the Ministry stated that the name Accra International Airport will remain the official name in international civil aviation records.

The airport was originally named in 1969 to honor Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a senior military officer killed during a failed coup attempt in 1967. The restoration of the name aligns with efforts to standardize Ghana's aviation identity and ensure consistency across international documents.
