NDLEA Chairman Calls for Financial Offensive Against Cartels

On Wednesday in Abuja, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), urged a more robust financial strategy against drug cartels. He stated that the agency should focus on the financial networks sustaining drug trafficking rather than solely on arrests and drug seizures.

Marwa emphasized that without targeting the financiers and assets of drug organizations, the fight against drug trafficking would be incomplete. He highlighted the importance of following financial trails in investigations, as drug trafficking is fundamentally a business driven by financial gain.

Marwa noted the increasing sophistication of drug networks, which now utilize technology and complex financial arrangements, including cryptocurrency, to conceal their operations. He called for enhanced technical capabilities among NDLEA personnel to effectively trace illicit funds and dismantle criminal enterprises.

Marwa concluded that the NDLEA must evolve from merely detecting crime to disrupting it and depriving traffickers of their financial resources.
