Rivers State Government Intervenes in Marriage Plan Controversy

The Rivers State government has summoned Lauretta Dimpka, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare, following public outrage over a marriage plan arranged by Chibuzor Chinyer of Omega Power Ministries for his 21-year-old adopted daughter, who is autistic. The government intervened after the plan went viral, highlighting concerns that, despite good intentions, it violated existing laws.

Dimpka emphasized that the proposed marriage contravened the Child's Rights Act, the Persons with Disabilities Act, and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, which mandate strict safeguards for minors and individuals with special needs. She urged compliance with state regulations governing orphanages and children's homes to ensure adherence to child protection protocols.

Chinyer acknowledged a lapse in understanding the legal implications of his actions, indicating a need for better awareness regarding the rights of individuals with disabilities.
