Gunshots Erupt at Osun Motor Park Amid Union Tensions

On Sunday, gunshots were reported at the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife, Osun State, as suspected thugs defied Governor Ademola Adeleke's suspension of all National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) activities in motor parks across the state. Eyewitness accounts indicated that armed police officers escorted the thugs to the park, despite the governor's directive aimed at restoring peace.

Witnesses reported the use of gunfire and teargas, prompting people to flee. Concerns arose regarding security personnel allegedly undermining the government's efforts.

The Nigerian Navy intervened, arresting four thugs found with pump-action guns. This incident followed Adeleke's recent order to halt NURTW activities due to recurring violence linked to the union.

He instructed security agencies to arrest anyone operating under the union's name while ensuring commercial transport services continued. The Osun State Government clarified that the suspension did not dissolve the NURTW leadership, affirming Nurudeen Alowonle as the chairman.

Meanwhile, newly inaugurated chairman Kazeem Oyewale announced the resumption of union activities, contradicting the governor's directive.
