Head Teacher Urges Government to Improve School Conditions

Mr. Chinemerem Ekemezi, the head teacher of Ezelek Community Primary School in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State, called on the state government to address the deteriorating infrastructure affecting the school during the third annual inter-house sports competition held on Friday.

He outlined several challenges, including damaged classrooms, inadequate furniture, poor water supply, lack of sanitation facilities, and weak security infrastructure, which he attributed to vandalism. Ekemezi emphasized that the learning environment remains unconducive and dilapidated, particularly with the rainy season approaching.

Despite these challenges, he described the sports event as a symbol of hope rather than merely a competition. Mr.

Patrick Ubiaru, the education secretary for Umuahia South Local Government Education Authority, acknowledged the issues and attributed the damage to repeated vandalism and scavenging activities. He assured that Governor Alex Otti is committed to improving educational infrastructure across the state.

Ubiaru also highlighted the importance of sports in holistic education and the reintroduction of compulsory inter-house sports competitions to promote discipline and teamwork among students.
