Gunmen Kill 22 in Plateau State Attack on Health Workers

On April 6, 2023, gunmen attacked Kawel village in Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 individuals, including health workers who were on duty at a primary healthcare center. The attack occurred around 11:30 PM and was described by Christoph Luka, a youth leader in Bokko, as unprovoked.

The assailants opened fire indiscriminately, injuring several others. The Plateau State government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, condemned the attack, labeling it a heinous and senseless act of violence.

Security agencies were directed to intensify operations to track down the perpetrators. The Plateau State Police Command confirmed that 18 people were dead at the scene, with additional casualties reported later.

Survivors fled to neighboring communities, and the government ordered immediate relief for affected families. This incident follows a series of violent attacks in the region, raising concerns about ongoing security challenges despite previous assurances from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the safety of civilians.
