Clerics Advocate for Marriage Counselling in Mosques

At the 2026 Ajase-Ipo Annual Imams Conference in Kwara State, clerics urged the establishment of counselling units in mosques to combat the rising divorce rate among Muslim families. The three-day conference, themed “Imams and the Muslim Home,” featured Dr Haruna Sanusi Lafiagi from Al-Hikmah University, who highlighted the inadequacy of brief marriage lectures typically given during wedding ceremonies.

He advocated for comprehensive pre-marital counselling and periodic workshops for youths to understand their roles and responsibilities in marriage. Lafiagi also stressed the importance of post-marital counselling and interaction between older and younger couples to address contemporary marital issues.

Additionally, Oba Ismail Bolaji Yahaya Alebiosu supported the creation of dedicated marriage departments in mosques, emphasizing the necessity for intending couples to grasp the Islamic marriage contract and the importance of follow-up guidance from imams.
