Jet Fuel Shortage Looms for Europe Amid Hormuz Blockade

ACI Europe has warned that Europe may face a jet fuel shortage within three weeks if the flow through the Strait of Hormuz does not significantly stabilize. This situation could disrupt airport operations and leave airlines short on supplies during the peak summer travel season.

The letter to EU officials highlighted that the ongoing restrictions have already pressured seven airports in Italy, which are experiencing limited access to jet fuel. Approximately 30% of Europe's jet fuel imports typically come from the Gulf region, and the current disruptions have caused crude oil prices to rise above $100 per barrel.

Airlines are already rerouting flights due to the restricted airspace, and as a result, they are beginning to pass increased fuel costs onto customers through surcharges and fees. The situation underscores Europe's heavy reliance on imported fuel and the limited refining capacity dedicated to jet fuel production.
