Mob Assaults Woman Accused of Witchcraft at Crusade

On March 13, 2023, Grace Ekoi, a 50-year-old woman, was assaulted by a mob during a church crusade in Onyadama, Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria. The attack occurred as she sought healing for her 14-month-old child.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that at least eight individuals took turns flogging her with long canes while the congregation continued to clap and sing. Despite her attempts to escape, she was caught and beaten again until she became motionless.

The crusade was organized by Usutu Bassei of Kabod International Church, who reportedly incited the violence. Following the incident, no arrests have been made, and there are no indications that a full investigation has begun.

The community, known for its agricultural activities, has a history of land disputes and violence. Local leaders have declined to comment on the incident, and the clan head did not respond to inquiries regarding the assault.
