WACOL Demands Justice for Rape Victim in Enugu

The Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL) has condemned the alleged torture, public rape, attempted murder, and banishment of a 34-year-old mother of six in Aninri Local Government Area, Enugu State, which occurred on July 17. WACOL described the incident as “barbaric” and a violation of the Enugu State Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law 2019.

The survivor fled domestic violence from her husband, who tracked her down and attacked her. After seeking refuge with a married palm kernel trader, she was raped by the trader's friends, and her husband arrived with a mob, publicly raping her while assaulting both victims.

The mob also stole money, tortured them, and banished the survivor and her family for reporting the case to the police. WACOL criticized the complicity of community leaders, including the Igwe and the President General, who initially aided the suspects.

Police confirmed some arrests, including the husband. WACOL has activated its legal and psychosocial teams to support the survivor.
