Jonathan Clarifies Remarks on Youth Leadership Age Cap

Former President Goodluck Jonathan clarified his recent comments about youth participation in governance, which were misrepresented in the media. In a statement issued by Ikechukwu Ez, Jonathan emphasized that he did not advocate for a maximum age limit of 50 for African leaders.

His remarks were made during the 50th anniversary commemorating the late General Murtala Mohammed, where he reflected on youth leadership and generational inclusivity in governance. Jonathan cited examples of young leaders in Nigeria's history, such as Olusegun Obasanjo at 38, Yakubu Gowon at 32, and Alfred Diete-Spiff at 24, to underscore the contributions of young leaders.

Ez further clarified that Jonathan's central message focused on competence and innovative capacity rather than imposing age restrictions. The statement also dismissed claims that Jonathan sought to disqualify older politicians from holding office, reaffirming his belief in the value of experience alongside youth in leadership roles.
