Uba Sani Distributes Free Fertiliser to 150,000 Farmers

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has initiated the distribution of 500 trucks of free fertilisers and tractors to 150,000 smallholder farmers across the 23 local governments of the state, continuing this program for the third consecutive year. In August of the previous year, he distributed 400 trucks of fertiliser to 100,000 farmers, with each receiving two bags.

The governor highlighted that this initiative is one of the most extensive fertilizer support programs by any sub-national government in Nigeria. He emphasized that the aim is to prevent rising production costs from leading to reduced cultivation, lower yields, or increased food insecurity.

Sani noted that selling fertiliser at subsidised prices would be ineffective, as most smallholder farmers could not afford it, and larger farmers would likely resell it at higher prices. Agriculture contributes approximately 43% to Kaduna State's GDP and employs 60% to 80% of the active workforce, with the state being a leading producer of maize, tomatoes, and ginger.
