IG Olatunji Disu Advocates Ban on Tinted Vehicles

Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu expressed a desire to implement a total ban on fully tinted vehicles across Nigeria, citing significant security risks linked to their use in kidnappings and armed robberies. Disu's comments were made in response to concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), represented by Afam Osigwe, who opposed the idea of a blanket ban.

Osigwe argued for the regulation of tinted glass permits rather than an outright prohibition, emphasizing that the NBA supports police oversight in the permit process. He insisted that the requirement for periodic renewals of tinted glass permits should not be outsourced to private companies.

Disu noted that the use of heavily tinted vehicles is often associated with criminal activities, complicating law enforcement efforts to identify vehicle occupants during stop-and-search operations. He announced that enforcement against illegal tinted vehicles would soon intensify nationwide, particularly targeting those that completely obscure visibility.
