Analyst Affirms IGP Can Serve Beyond Age 60 Legally

Busayo Mogaji, a security expert and public analyst, has stated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) can lawfully serve beyond the age of 60, contrary to recent public commentary suggesting otherwise. Mogaji clarified that the Nigeria Police Act of 2020 provides for a four-year tenure for the office of the IGP, which is designed to ensure stable leadership and the continued implementation of reforms within the police force.

He emphasized that the notion of compulsory retirement at age 60 reflects a misunderstanding of the statutory provisions established by the law. Mogaji urged stakeholders and the public to rely on verified legal frameworks when discussing police leadership reforms.

This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about the impending retirement of IGP Olatunji Disu in April 2026 and follows similar controversies surrounding former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. Additionally, President Bola Tinubu's approval of a law in 2024 aims to amend the Police Act to allow the IGP to remain in office beyond the age of 60.
