Ijumu Union Backs INEC Chairman Amid Removal Calls

The Ijumu Development Union (IDU) has expressed strong support for Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), dismissing calls for his resignation as driven by selfish interests. During a press conference held in Lokoja, Fatai Ad, the IDU President, stated that such calls do not reflect the will of the Nigerian people and warned that removing Amupitan would send a negative signal regarding Nigeria's commitment to democratic stability.

Ad highlighted Amupitan's distinguished character and legal expertise, asserting that he has not committed any offense and should not be made a scapegoat for political actors pursuing narrow agendas. The IDU emphasized that Amupitan's track record demonstrates his commitment to neutrality and transparency, which are essential for strengthening public trust in the electoral process.

The union cautioned that calls for his removal could undermine confidence in the electoral system and distract from INEC's core mandate to deliver credible elections.
