Illegal Logging Threatens Biodiversity in Nigeria's Ekuri Forest

Illegal logging incidents in Ekuri Forest, Cross River State, Nigeria, have led to the arrest and subsequent release of forest defenders without charges. The Global Forest Coalition reported on the illegal activities, highlighting the threats to the 33,600-hectare community-managed rainforest known for its biodiversity conservation efforts.

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation and environmentalists like Desmond Majekodunmi advocate for stricter enforcement of environmental laws to combat illegal logging and protect biodiversity.

Balarab Abba Lawal, the Minister of Environment, has initiated efforts to address biodiversity loss and climate change concerns through regulatory enforcement by the Nigerian Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA).
